Donny Douglass has been a dog lover since the day he was born. His family has always included animals in their lives. In 2011, Donny, his sister and co-owner of Two Paws Up, Lori, as well as his youngest nephew, Nick, moved to a 10-acre property in Valley Center and started a dog boarding and day camp facility called Doggy Hydeaway. Due to the home-like environment and the endless land with trails, rescue groups quickly found Doggy Hydeaway to be the perfect place for dogs they had in their rescues that needed to decompress, socialize with other dogs in a controlled environment, structured twice daily exercise, and a calm, quiet place to be. The daily exposure to so many dogs who had behavior issues and were deemed "unadoptable" gave Donny, Nick and Lori a level of experience that they never imagined.
In 2015, Nick chose to move to Orange County and start his own Behavior Rehabilitation business called State of Mind Dog Psychology. Donny and Lori had a huge opportunity presented to them by the previous owner of Two Paws Up, as she was looking to retire and felt we had the skills and temperament to take over her thriving business.
Fast forward 9 years, Donny has been the Top Dog in our kennel-free/pack-environment boarding and day camp facility at Two Paws Up since 2016, managing a large pack of dogs on a daily basis, and also teaching our staff how to manage a pack of dogs. He also has been our trainer for many years, providing customers with Obedience Training and helping with minor behavior issues++ in the home or out on leashed walks. His vast knowledge and experience, calm-assertive personality, and oodles of compassion and empathy make him a very balanced and caring trainer.

What is the difference between behavior modification and obedience training? Unlike obedience training, the goal of behavioral training is not to get the dog to comply with a command. Instead, the focus is on rehabilitation or the rewiring of the dog's responses to certain conditions or stimuli.
All training services are catered to each family's needs and can vary depending on your situation.
We offer Obedience Training, Puppy Obedience Training, as well as in-home consultations to address minor behavior issues++.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING
Obedience training may just be the best gift you can give yourself, your family, and your pet. It teaches your dog appropriate social behavior with both people and animals; helps correct annoying behaviors like jumping, digging, barking, and chewing; and keeps your dog entertained and happy.
Obedience Training usually refers to the training of a dog and the term is most commonly used in that context. Basic Obedience Training makes an effort to teach the dog to reliably respond to basic Verbal Commands such as “Sit,” “Down,” “Come,” and “Stay”. It is also a great language to learn that your dog understands.
++BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION
Behavior modification also known as behavior rehabilitation or behavior resolution, is a treatment approach for changing the undesirable behaviors that your dog exhibits. Behavior modification can address a broad range of issues and is designed to meet the specific needs of each dog and household.
Behavior modification addresses issues such as:
Training your dog should be a fun experience. It requires dedication, consistency, and patience from ALL family members to maintain consistency so that all parties are relating similarly to the family pet, whereby creating a non-confusing atmosphere for everyone.
With that in mind, as the owner, you will need to modify some of your behaviors and reactions. This change is possible if you wish to assist your dog. Often, the humans in a dog's life are the source of issues. Feelings of nervousness, fear, or anxiety at any moment can influence your dog's reaction to other dogs or people. If you do not assume the role of Pack Leader, your dog will naturally adopt this position and feel compelled to protect you. Thus, learning to become their leader is crucial. Your 100% participation is one of the keys to success. Your calm-assertive leadership is what they crave. Pack animals love to follow the leader.

Nick, Lori's youngest son, has an incredible sense at communicating with dogs on their level. He has been working with the most severe cases for 12 years. If you require his advanced skills, please contact us by email and put State of Mind in the subject line. Give a brief description of your dog's issues, and a phone number to contact you. Nick limits the number of dogs he works with to maintain quality of service, so please be patient during the process. He typically returns calls or emails within 48 hours.
